From 1986 I started organising whole school football tournaments, which started with the World Cup 86. The years between World Cups we had the Euro Championships and Two Nations cup, a tournament between Scottish and English club sides. My first class made a replica papier mache World Cup, and additional trophies for the other various competitions. Teams were made up of boys and girls of different ages. They played the group, and knockout stages, over a number of weeks at Ropner Park and Grosvenor Road playing fields.
In 1987 we had a Two Nations Cup, with the finals being staged at Ropner Park. I’m unsure of which team actually won on the day, it may have been Richard Bartlam’s Dunfermline team who were awarded a trophy on the day. Other trophy winners were Craig Overton’s Chelsea team, David Collins’ Clydebank team and Mark McCairns’ St Mirren team.
